About The Awards
The CEE Environment Excellence Awards 2023 is a valuable initiative to recognize and facilitates companies and thermal power plants in India that have demonstrated a strong commitment to environmental sustainability and have implemented innovative best practices in environmental management. By acknowledging and promoting these efforts, the awards program can inspire other companies and thermal power plants to follow suit and adopt sustainable practices that benefit both the environment and the economy.
About the Conference
This year’s virtual conference on Air Quality Control Systems (AQCS) in Thermal Power Plants, organised by the Council of Enviro Excellence, will primarily focus on the ongoing and additional efforts made by the thermal power sector towards improving the air quality standards by various means and methods. Additionally, by engaging with environmental and industry experts, the conference will also have dedicated sessions on scaling up technologies for decarbonisation in thermal industries.
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MOEFCC) has further extended the deadlines set upon thermal power plants to reduce emission of sulphurous oxides.
- For plants within a 10-km radius of Delhi-NCR and cities with a population of more than 10 lakh, the deadline has been extended from December 31, 2022 to December 31, 2024.
- For power plants within a 10-km radius of non-attainment cities, the deadline has been pushed from December 31, 2023 to December 31, 2025.
- For the remaining power plants across the country, the deadline has been postponed from December 31, 2024 to December 31, 2026.
- Power plant units declared to retire before December 31, 2027, will be exempted from meeting the specified norms
The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) in the National Capital Region (NCR) and adjoining areas has set timelines for captive thermal power plants (CTPPs) to gradually replace coal with co-firing biomass and straw pellets. Targeting at least 5 per cent co-firing of biomass pellets, latest by September 30, 2023 and at least 10 per cent co-firing by December 31, 2023.

How far has the thermal power industry progressed?
The role of Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) towards decarbonizing the power plants: Technologies to remove CO2 from the flue gas and from the atmosphere. Thermal power plants have made this possible by retrofitting various technologies, ranging from advanced monitoring and control technologies to latest technical integrations.
Energy storage has a vital role to play in the green transition of BIMSTEC countries, as per a recent report, India plans to achieve 60 per cent of power from non-fossil fuels by 2027, this definitely will ease the load of coal-fired thermal power plants, also accelerating the use of renewable energy
Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Station (CAAQMS) and real-time safety surveillance monitoring system at thermal power stations; ambient air quality monitoring for SO2, NOX, CO, O3, CO2, H2S, NH3, installation of Flue Gas Desulphurization systems.
Use of Methanol as a low-carbon alternative fuel, Eg: NTPC’s 4.8-GW Vindhyachal Super Thermal Power Station, where the production unit has implemented a process to convert the CO2 to methanol.

• According to a recent Niti Ayog report, India needs to invest up to Rs 50,000 crore in carbon capture by 2030, in order to meet its Net Zero commitment by 2070.
• The Global Air Pollution Control Systems Market is growing at a CAGR of 4.3 per cent during 2022-2029.

The CEE National Environment Excellence Awards 2023 recognizes excellence in power plant life management and performance improvement. The award establishes specific benchmarks for power plants and power plant professionals to measure their performance in several key environmental parameters such as CO2, SO2, & NOx emissions, Particulate Matter emissions, disposal and utilization of Ash, etc…
